Siding on Lake Whatcom: A Different Set of Problems

Homes around Lake Whatcom and Sudden Valley sit in one of the more demanding microclimates in Whatcom County. You've got the lake itself holding moisture in the air well past the point where a town a few miles inland has already dried out, thick tree canopy that keeps roofs and siding shaded and damp for long stretches, and driving rain that rolls in off the Sound and gets funneled up the lake basin. Add in the salt-tinged marine air that reaches this whole corner of Washington, and you have exterior materials working overtime almost year-round.

We've been doing exterior work in this part of the county long enough to know that "it looked fine last year" doesn't mean much here. Moss and algae get a foothold in shaded, north-facing sections of a house faster than most homeowners expect, and once organic growth is holding moisture against a wall, whatever's underneath it — paint, primer, the substrate itself — starts breaking down quietly, out of sight, until it isn't.

What the Climate Does to Different Siding Materials

Not every siding product handles this environment the same way, and that's really the whole reason we've narrowed our installs down to one:

  • Wood and primed spruce need consistent repainting and caulking to keep water out. In a shaded, humid lakeside setting, that maintenance window shrinks — moisture gets in at seams and cut ends faster than a normal maintenance schedule accounts for.
  • Vinyl siding doesn't rot, but it wasn't built to be a moisture barrier on its own, and it can warp or become brittle with sustained temperature swings and impact over time. It also can't be painted a darker color without risking heat warping, which limits homeowners going for a more current look.
  • LP SmartSide and similar engineered wood products perform well when installation is flawless and maintenance never slips, but they're wood-based, and wood-based products in a persistently damp, shaded environment like this one have less margin for error at seams, cut edges, and ground clearance.

None of these are "bad" products in the abstract. They're just not what we'd choose to put on a house that's going to sit under tree cover a few hundred yards from a lake, catching driving rain and marine humidity for eight or nine months of the year.

Why We Install James Hardie Only

James Hardie fiber cement is the one siding product we've been willing to stand behind for homes in this area. It's non-combustible, it doesn't feed moss and algae growth the way wood fiber can, and the ColorPlus factory finish holds its color without the repaint cycle that wood and some engineered products require. Hardie also builds region-specific HZ product lines engineered for wetter, colder climates like ours — that's a meaningful difference from a one-size-fits-all product.

Correct installation matters just as much as the product itself. On a lake-adjacent, shaded lot, that means proper flashing and water-shedding detail at every seam, correct ground clearance, and attention to the areas where moss and moisture like to collect — inside corners, under eaves, anywhere airflow is limited. We install to the manufacturer's specifications because on a house like the ones around Sudden Valley, the installation is doing at least as much work as the material.

More Than Siding: Roofing, Windows, and Decks

The same climate pressures that wear down siding go after the rest of a home's exterior too. We handle roofing, windows, and decks for homeowners in this area, and we look at all four together rather than in isolation — a roof that's shedding water onto a siding transition, or a window flashing detail that's letting moisture behind the wall, will undo good siding work no matter how well the siding itself is installed. Decks exposed to lake humidity and shade face their own moss and moisture challenges, and we bring the same materials judgment to those as we do to siding.

Why a Local Crew Matters Here

Sudden Valley and the Lake Whatcom area aren't quite like the rest of Whatcom County. Lot access can be tighter, tree cover changes how a house dries out after a storm, and the moss season here runs longer than it does on more open, sun-exposed properties closer to Bellingham. A crew that works this specific area regularly knows to check those shaded, low-airflow spots first — the places where problems tend to start — rather than treating every house the same.

We're not going to tell you your existing siding is failing if it isn't, and we're not going to push a full replacement when a repair or a partial section would do. What we will tell you honestly is what we're seeing, what's driving it, and what your realistic options are.
