Fiber cement is only as good as what's behind it. That means a proper weather-resistive barrier, correctly lapped and taped, plus flashing at every window, door, and horizontal trim transition. On homes near the water, we pay extra attention to butt joint flashing and z-flashing above trim boards, since those are the spots driving rain finds first.
Fastening and Metal
Fasteners need to be corrosion-resistant and driven to Hardie's specified depth and pattern — overdriven nails crack the board over time, and underdriven ones can back out and let water track behind the plank. In a salt-air environment, we don't cut corners on fastener grade.
Clearances and Gaps
Hardie specifies minimum clearances from grade, roofing, decks, and other siding terminations, and minimum gaps at trim and butt joints so the material can move seasonally without cracking.
